In Iowa, while mass vaccination clinics are being held in some counties, many counties are also using local pharmacies to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine. For example, the Towncrest Pharmacy in Iowa City has developed an assembly line-like system that enables it to vaccinate 100 people a day. Randy McDonough, co-owner of the pharmacy, explained: “To me, it’s all about the planning, the systemizing of the process and making sure you follow it; because if there’s anything that breaks down, you can kinda look within the process at what did go down and make it better the next time.” While the pharmacy currently only administers the Moderna vaccine, it hopes to receive the Pfizer vaccine soon and has ordered an ultra-cold freezer in which to store it. Mike Deninger, the other co-owner of Towncrest Pharmacy, said they made the investment in the freezer, even though the vaccine is free, because they want to speed up the vaccination process.
