In Minnesota, Fairview Health Services has announced that it will shut down 16 of its clinics and five pharmacies by the end of 2020. The health care company posted losses of $163 million in the first 6 months of 2020 due to the effects of COVID-19. The new cuts will eliminate 900 positions and close Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, MN. Fairview Health explained that among the reasons for the long-term financial challenges facing health care companies is that “our country’s health system is broken. It is unaffordable and inaccessible for too many people, and it hasn’t evolved to meet today’s care needs and opportunities,” the company said in explaining the changes. The services provided by these clinics will be shifted to other nearby locations, with Fairview saying it will “be expanding services across more than 40 clinics and primary care locations.”
