About 20% of U.S. adults reported current use of a tobacco product in 2019, most often combustible products such as cigarettes, according to a new CDC report. CDC analyzed data from the 2019 National Health Interview Survey which measured use of five tobacco products: cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco. According to the data, an estimated 50.6 million U.S. adults (20.8%) reported current use of a tobacco product, with 80.5% reporting use of combustible products. Cigarettes were the most commonly used tobacco product (14.0%), followed by e-cigarettes (4.5%). Use of e-cigarettes was highest among adults aged 18-24 years (9.3%), with 56% of these individuals reporting they had never smoked cigarettes. Additionally, 18.6% of adults who said they currently used tobacco products reported using two or more tobacco products. The CDC study, published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, noted also noted wide disparities in tobacco product use. CDC noted the implementation of comprehensive, evidence-based, population-level interventions, in coordination with regulation of tobacco products, can reduce the burden of tobacco-related disease and death in the United States. These strategies include tobacco price increases, comprehensive smoke-free policies, high-impact anti-tobacco media campaigns, and barrier-free cessation coverage.
